Megalodon was one of the largest and most powerful sharks ever to exist. This enormous prehistoric predator lived during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, around 23–3.6 million years ago, long after the dinosaurs had become extinct.
Best known from its huge fossil teeth, Megalodon could grow to an estimated 15–18 metres long, although exact size estimates vary because shark skeletons are made mostly of cartilage and rarely fossilise. Its teeth, however, are incredibly strong and distinctive, with broad triangular shapes, serrated edges, and impressive size.
Megalodon was an apex predator that hunted large marine animals, including whales and other sizeable sea creatures. Its powerful jaws and cutting teeth made it perfectly adapted for taking on large prey in the ancient oceans.
Megalodon teeth are found in many parts of the world, including the USA, Morocco, Indonesia, Peru, and parts of Europe. Their wide distribution shows that Megalodon was a highly successful global predator, living in warm seas across much of the planet.
Today, Megalodon teeth are among the most popular fossils for collectors. Their size, age, and connection to one of the greatest predators in Earth’s history make them a striking addition to any fossil collection.
