About This Dinosaur

Edmontosaurus was a large plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, around 73–66 million years ago. It belonged to a group of dinosaurs known as hadrosaurs, often nicknamed “duck-billed dinosaurs” because of their broad, flattened beaks.

This impressive herbivore lived in what is now North America and was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs before the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous. Edmontosaurus could grow to around 12 metres long, making it one of the larger hadrosaurs.

Edmontosaurus used its broad beak to crop vegetation and had rows of tightly packed teeth at the back of its mouth for grinding tough plant material. Fossil discoveries have even preserved skin impressions and soft tissue outlines, helping scientists understand what this dinosaur looked like in remarkable detail.

Because Edmontosaurus fossils are relatively well known, this dinosaur is an excellent example of how advanced and successful plant-eating dinosaurs had become by the end of the Age of Dinosaurs.
