About This Dinosaur
About This Dinosaur
Titanosaurs were a diverse group of long-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs that lived mainly during the Cretaceous Period, around 145–66 million years ago. They belonged to the sauropod family — the same wider group as dinosaurs such as Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, and Camarasaurus.
These enormous herbivores were among the largest animals ever to walk the Earth. Some titanosaurs were relatively modest in size for sauropods, while others, such as Argentinosaurus and Patagotitan, may have reached truly gigantic lengths and weights.
Titanosaurs had long necks, long tails, powerful pillar-like legs, and huge bodies adapted for feeding on vegetation. Unlike many earlier sauropods, some titanosaurs also had small bony plates, called osteoderms, embedded in their skin, offering a form of natural body armour.
Fossils of titanosaurs have been found across the world, including South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Their widespread remains show that they were one of the most successful sauropod groups of the Late Cretaceous.
Titanosaurs are especially fascinating because they were among the last surviving sauropods, living right up until the end-Cretaceous extinction event around 66 million years ago. For collectors and dinosaur enthusiasts, titanosaur fossils represent the final chapter of the giant long-necked dinosaurs.
